As someone who cleans out houses, I throw out bottles and bottles of half-used beauty products from people of all ages. Working with clients to lessen their beauty spend is hard because it can feel like I am negating their attractiveness so instead I talk about consistency and quality over quantity. But inside I'm screaming because it all feels like just a new version of the old patriarchal trap.

Why do they only use half a bottle? If they're not sure it's a good product, why not buy just a sample in order to try it out?

"But inside I'm screaming because it all feels like just a new version of the old patriarchal trap."

Seems like practically everyone involved in the beauty industry is either female or gay, eh?

I'm just not convinced that everything comes down to the patriarchy. Women spend more on beauty, and they get more Tinder matches. Maybe if guys spent more on beauty they would get more Tinder matches too.

Supposing Trump passed a law which prohibits women from spending more than $50 annually on beauty. Would this be smashing the patriarchy, or would it be an indicator that the US is turning into the Handmaid's Tale? [I don't think the modern concept of "patriarchy" is even coherent enough to answer that question.]

Fantastic read! I appreciate the thorough analysis. I will never forget when I started tracking my spending and realized how much I was spending on skincare/beauty. Have you read Jessica DeFino’s substack The Review of Beauty? I think you would love it!
